The term “toast” is defined as a ritual in which a glass of libations is raised, words of praise are given and a drink is taken as an expression of goodwill and honor. Traditionally, the father of the bride, as host of the wedding reception offers the first toast where he thanks the guests for attending, discloses memories of the bride’s childhood, and wishes the newly married couple a happy and healthy life together.

The Best Man then follows offering a short speech usually 3-5 minutes that combines a mixture of humor and sincerity. The humor traditionally takes the form of poking fun at the groom, while the sincerity incorporates complimentary comments and praise about the bride and groom. The actual “toast” is then delivered at the end when he wishes the bride and groom a long  happy life together.

The Maid of Honer would then follow suit and make a toast, if she wishes, to the bride and groom.

The Groom then offers the final toast thanking the brides parents for hosting the wedding, the wedding party for their participation, and dedicating the toast to the bridesmaids.
